Before you fly
- Download the apps you need. Many foreign apps and sites, including Google services, are not accessible in China.
- Set up Alipay or WeChat and link your international card.
- Bring originals: passport, admission letter, JW201/JW202, physical exam form, diploma, photos.
- Carry some cash (CNY) for the first day.
Day 1 — within 24 hours
- Accommodation registration. University dorms and hotels do this for you. If you rent off-campus, go to the local police station with your passport and lease.
Week 1
- Register at your university and get your student ID.
- Buy health insurance. It is mandatory for international students, and most universities arrange a group plan.
- Get a SIM card. Bring your passport; registration uses your real name.
- Health check verification at the International Travel Healthcare Center (X1 visa holders).
Weeks 2–4
- Apply for your residence permit before day 30 (X1 visa holders).
- Open a bank account — many banks ask for your residence permit, so this often comes after it.
- Learn the essentials: canteen, library, campus card top-up, and transport apps for metro, taxis and trains.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign bank card?
Yes. Both apps let foreign visitors link international Visa or Mastercard cards. Some services still need a Chinese bank account, so open one once you have your residence permit.
What are the emergency numbers in China?
110 for police, 120 for an ambulance and 119 for fire.
