The route for graduates of Chinese universities

Since 2017, outstanding international graduates with a master's degree or higher from a Chinese university can apply for a work permit within one year of graduation without prior work experience. Typical conditions:

  • Average grade of at least 80/100 (or B+)
  • Clean conduct record during your studies
  • The job is related to your field and the salary is not below the local average
  • Your employer is a legally registered entity

Some cities and free-trade zones have pilot policies that extend similar options to bachelor's graduates or for start-ups. Check the local human resources bureau.

Process overview

  1. Get a job offer from an employer licensed to hire foreigners.
  2. The employer applies for the work permit notice online.
  3. Change your residence permit from study to work (or obtain a Z visa if you are abroad).
  4. Receive your work permit card and the new residence permit.

Plan ahead while studying

  • Keep your grades above 80 if you aim for the direct route.
  • Do an approved internship (see our part-time work guide) to build connections.
  • Improve your Chinese: HSK 5+ widens your options considerably.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need two years of work experience?

Can I change from a student permit to a work permit without leaving China?

Often yes, depending on the city. Ask your employer's HR and the local Exit-Entry bureau before your student residence permit expires.
