Two types of student visa

X1 visa X2 visa
Length of study More than 180 days 180 days or less
Typical use Degree programs, one-year language programs One-semester language programs, summer schools, exchanges
After arrival Must apply for a residence permit within 30 days Stay for the period printed on the visa; no residence permit

If your program is longer than 180 days you need an X1, even if you plan to travel home during the holidays.

Documents you will usually need

  1. Passport valid for at least six months, with blank visa pages
  2. Visa application form and a recent photo meeting the specifications
  3. Original admission letter (录取通知书) from your university
  4. JW201 or JW202 form — issued by the university together with the admission letter
  5. Foreigner Physical Examination Form — often requested for X1 applications and needed again for the residence permit

Requirements differ between consulates, so always check the page of the Chinese embassy, consulate or visa application service center that covers your place of residence.

Step by step

  1. Receive your admission package (admission letter + JW201/JW202). Universities usually send these between May and July for September intake.
  2. Book an appointment at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center or consulate.
  3. Submit your documents and pay the fee. Processing usually takes about a week; allow extra time in peak season (July–August).
  4. Check the visa when you collect it: type (X1/X2), number of entries, and the "enter before" date.

Common mistakes

  • Booking flights before the visa is issued. Wait until you have the visa in hand.
  • Arriving long before registration. The 30-day residence permit clock starts on the day you enter China.
  • Losing the original JW form. You will need it again for the residence permit. Keep it with your passport.
  • Entering on a different visa type. Changing a tourist or business visa into student status inside China is generally not possible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study in China on a tourist visa?

No. Enrolling in a degree or long language program requires a student (X) visa. Visa-free entry schemes cover tourism, business and visits, not study. Apply for the X visa in your home country before you travel.

How long is the X1 visa valid after I arrive?

The X1 visa only lets you enter. Within 30 days of arrival you must apply for a student residence permit, which then becomes your legal basis for staying.

What is the difference between JW201 and JW202?

Both are the official Visa Application for Study in China form issued with your admission letter. JW201 is for scholarship students (such as CSC); JW202 is for self-funded students.
